Autonomous cars won't change the world gradually; the change will be incredibly sudden. Those who deny it are like Taleb's Turkey, living a blissful life and dismissing fears of a terrifying death right up to Thanksgiving Day.  Taleb was talking about black swan events, sudden developments that change our underlying understanding of something. Maybe autonomous cars will fit into this category. Their impact on the world will be like this: not much, not much, not much, total transformation.
